Doctor's Bag - A finished project

This post has been a long time coming, I received this Doctor's bag pattern from 3 lovely ladies as a Christmas present.

They said they wanted something where I could pick my favourite fabrics. After much brain racking, wanting the bag to be perfect, one that I would use again and again, I decided that the main fabric should be English Paper Pieced (EPP) using up many of my well liked fabrics.

I chose grey fabrics as I have a terrible habit of making gorgeous brightly coloured bags which then often clash with what I'm wearing - this bag is going to be monochromatic enough that it can go with anything, or at least, that's the aim.  I am loving the combination of soft colours.

There were a few firsts in this bag - I had never used this thick bag interfacing before - it's great, gives the bag so much shape.  I will definitely use it again!

I decided to add a zipped inner pocket and my first attempt wasn't great:

I know you can see the main problem if you can see past that bad sewing! There is no zipper pull. You guessed it, I then unpicked it all and tried again!

I also added a magnetic fastening instead of the velcro in the pattern, not that you can see this!

As I mentioned, this bag pattern was given to me by 3 lovely ladies, so I have added a little something to remind me of each of them.

Firstly B loves dragonflies, so I included one in a hexagon

Unfortunately I didn't check the pattern for placement before sewing the hexagons together, but luckily it just worked out and it peaks out around one of the straps on the front!

Whenever it rains J get's her Wellies/Wellington Boots/Gum Boots out and whenever I see them they remind me of her so I included this hand made label which I will see whenever I open the bag up

As you can see, I included one of my labels too!

And M likes to sew and gave me some fabrics a while ago that were superfluous to her needs, I have used one of the bright fabrics inside the inner pocket

 I love this bright pop of colour!

All in all I enjoyed making this bag, even though it has taken a while!  I had a few issues trying to fit all of the layers under my presser foot when attaching the handles, but with a bit of an adjustment I got it all under. I would make it again and will definitely be working with this bag interfacing again.
